"What Do the Dybbuks Say: From An-sky to Contemporary Cinema"

Lecture by Svetlana Pakhomova – a research fellow at our Museum and a specialist in Jewish and Israeli cinema

The dybbuk is one of the most striking figures in Jewish tradition and in mysticism at large. After stepping onto the theatrical stage in the early 1920s – thanks to the efforts of the ethnographer and playwright S. An-sky – the dybbuk has remained in the creative spotlight, eventually migrating to the screen. While An-sky’s play “Between Two Worlds” became almost a compulsory part of national theaters’ repertoires, in cinema the story is currently experiencing a revival across a wide variety of genres. Why is this happening now, so many years later?
One can find out more about this at a joint lecture featuring our own Svetlana Pakhomova and film scholar Denis Viren from the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The lecture will take place on October 25 at 6:00 PM at the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center.
