About the museum

The Museum of the Jewish History in Russia, the first Jewish Museum in our country after a long interval, was opened in Moscow in May 18, 2011. In November 2012 the Museum became a Member of the Association of the Europe Jewish Museums.

Nowadays Jewish Museums are an important element of a cultural landscape in the entire world. The main task of such Museums is preserving historical memory and telling about Jewish culture and traditions that were almost eliminated in Europe during the Second World War.

In the Russian Empire at the beginning of the XX century, and later in the Soviet Union the numerically largest Jewish Community lived – about 5 million men. And there were museums of Jewish ethnography and culture, the last of which was closed at the beginning of the 1950s.

In our days when the ban on the “Jewish” theme is taken away a chance to get acquainted with the history and traditions of Russian Jewry has appeared.
